About Gokarna

Gokarna is derived from two words i.e. Gau means ‘Cow’ and Karna means ‘Ear’, hence the naming.

As per a Hindu mythological tale, Lord Shiva descended on earth through the ear of a cow, so the town got its name.

Another reason for naming this place is because it is at the confluence of two rivers Gangavali and Aghanashini and this looks like a Cow’s ear shaped.
