Cellular Jail, A testament of India's struggle for independence
The Cellular Jail is an iconic landmark that holds rich history and significance. Located in Port Blair, Andaman Islands. It is like a time machine back to when the British ruled. While now a renowned tourist destination, during the British colonial era, this prison held countless Indians. Its haunting corridor and cells stand as a reminder of the unimaginable hardship and sacrifices made by the Indian freedom fighters.
Historical Background
The three-storey prison, built over 18 years by the British starting in 1890. The cell was designed to isolate political leaders and prisoners involved in India's struggle for independence. Originally featuring 698 cells in seven wings extending from a central watch tower, only three wings remain today. It was also called "Kala Pani" or "Black Water" due to its geographical location and harsh conditions of prisoners involving grueling labor, isolation and brutal punishments. The great revolutionary like Veer Savarkar, Batukeshwar Dutt, Sohan Singh, Fazl-e-Haq were imprisoned here
Preserving the Legacy:
The premises include a museum housing an art gallery, martyrs' memorial, the original gallows, and scenic views from the once-central tower. Try not to miss the light and sound show in the evening.
